International Course on Infrared Spectroscopy

22 - 24 August 2005.

Utrecht University

Infrared and Raman Group

Infrared spectroscopy (NIR, MIR, FIR) is among the most widely used and powerful identification and structural tools of today's chemist. The scientist, working in the field of organic and inorganic chemistry, biological products, polymers, catalysis, environmental pollution, pharmaceuticals, quality control, etc., must have an up-to-date working knowledge of the principals and applications of this type of spectroscopy.

From 1965 until now the Infrared & Raman Group, Faculty of Chemistry, Utrecht University, has offered Infrared courses to over 1250 people from industry, the public sector and academia.

The primary aim of the course is to familiarise participants with the capabilities and limitations of infrared spectroscopy, and to discuss how this technique can be successfully applied. The course has proved to be beneficial to both, starters as well as spectroscopists with experience.

The course includes plenary lectures on:

The lectures are interspersed with practical sessions for small groups illustrating instrument operation & control and various accessories and sampling techniques.

In addition, there will be ample time for informal discussions, and participants are encouraged to consult the staff on problems of particular interest.
The course language is English, but other languages may be used in smaller groups and for personal discussions.
No previous experience with infrared is required but some background in chemistry is assumed.

A variety of spectrometers and accessories will be available for use as hands-on instruction. State-of-the-art equipment is kindly supplied by the instrument companies.

Course co-ordination:
Dr. Tom Visser

Timetable:
Monday - Thursday 9.00-17.00 h, with breaks for coffee/tea and lunches. A course dinner is held Wednesday night.
